Price Wins Singles Title In All-BYU Final
PROVO, Utah – Megan Price claimed the BYU Invitational singles title for the BYU women's tennis team after a grueling three-set duel against teammate Morgan Anderson Saturday at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
“They both played really well,” said BYU coach Lauren Jones-Spencer. “It’s hard to play your teammates, especially in the final. I think they both handled it really well and I’m really looking forward to this season.”
Price, a senior, took the first set from the freshman Anderson 6-4 in the veteran-rookie showdown. Not deterred, Anderson battled her way to win a tiebreaker in the second, pushing Price to a third set. Price’s experience shined as she regained confidence and sailed to a third-set victory, 6-3, earning her the singles title of Bracket A.
“I think it was a great match,” Price said. “We both started a little nervous. She played amazing in the second set and it was really close but experience came through in the end. She’s going to be fantastic for the team. She has a lot of energy and works super hard.”
This is the fifth straight year BYU has won the BYU Invitational singles title.
In Bracket B, junior Aubrey Paul defeated Brittiny Moore of Weber State, 6-2, 6-2, propelling her into the Bracket B singles final. Paul made quick of her next opponent, Utah State’s Monica Abella, dropping only four games between the two sets. The win earned Paul the Bracket B singles title.
The Cougars made a clean sweep of the Bracket A titles over the weekend, with the doubles title going to Paul and sophomore Desiree Tran Friday.
McKenzie Davis and Brianna Harris of Utah State defeated Weber State’s Thais Kurer and Ashley Tanner 8-4 to claim the Bracket B doubles title.
BYU now turns its focus to the Cal Invitational, which opens Friday Sept. 30 in Berkley, Calif.
The collegiate athletes participated as individuals in this tournament while representing their schools.
