PROVO, Utah — Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe has named Lauren Jones-Spencer the permanent head coach of the women’s tennis team at BYU. Jones-Spencer was the interim head coach for the Cougars during the 2010-11 season, and was an assistant coach for two seasons from 2008-10.

“Lauren is a former Cougar who played like a champion for us as a student athlete,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “She now has the unique opportunity to lead the women's program as the coach. Her task is to help the Cougars gain respect not only in the West Coast Conference, but on the national stage as well.

In her first season as head coach, Jones-Spencer led a young Cougar team to a 9-12 record. Under her leadership, Callie Craig and Megan Price earned All-Mountain West Conference singles and doubles honors, while capturing the MWC Tournament doubles title. Callie and her sister Kelsie Craig were named 2010-11 MWC Scholar-Athletes.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to continue rebuilding the women’s tennis team into a top tennis program,” said Jones-Spencer. “I’m looking forward to joining the West Coast Conference. I have a lot of confidence in our players and look forward to winning championships.”

Jones-Spencer played her college career at BYU from 2003 to 2007, where she helped the Cougars to a Mountain West Conference Championships title her senior year. Jones-Spencer went undefeated in singles in the tournament at the No. 2 position, clinching the win for the Cougars in all three matches of the championships.

During her collegiate career Jones-Spencer compiled an 85-51 singles record and 81-35 doubles record. She had a season-high 25 singles wins during her senior season.

Jones-Spencer graduated from BYU with a degree graphic design. She is married to Kart Spencer. The couple resides in Provo, Utah.
