More Wins For Netters In Memphis

MEMPHIS -- The No. 73 BYU women’s tennis team had more success on the court in Day 3 of the Memphis Winter Invitational, recording eight wins Saturday.

“I feel like we played really well,” interim head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “This tournament was a great chance for us to get warmed up and ready for the season.”

Freshman Callie Craig of Orem, Utah, and team captain Megan Price were undefeated in doubles and only had one loss each in singles, Price playing in the No. 1 position and Craig in the No. 3. Elizaveta Ezhova also won all her singles matches except one.

The Cougars won the three doubles matches against Memphis, with Craig and Price defeating Stefanie Mikesz and Mariya Slupska 8-5, Carney and Desiree Tran beating Courtney Collins and Andrea Arques-Garcia 8-4 and Ezhova and Aubry Paul of Sandy, Utah, coming out on top against Kathleen Hawkins and Kelly Gray 9-8.

In doubles against Ole Miss, Craig and Price pulled through for the Cougars, beating Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie 8-3.

In singles, four Cougars rose above their Missouri opponents. Price won her match against Kaitlyn Ritchie in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 and was joined by Craig, Ezhova and Paul who all won their respective matches.

The Cougars return to Provo to play Washington, Saturday at 11 a.m. at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.
