Four wins for Cougars

SANTA BARBARA -- In the opening rounds of the UCSB Classic, the BYU women’s tennis team grabbed four victories Friday morning.

No. 4 seed Megan Price took the match against Khunpak Issara of Pepperdine 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the second round of bracket A.

Freshman Annika Huish also won her first match in singles flight C, defeating Judy Liening of Eastern Washington 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Callie Craig fell to Kiersten Meehan of host UCSB 6-1, 7-5 in singles bracket A.

In bracket B, No. 1 seed Elle Carney, Elizaveta Ezhova and Aubrey Paul lost to their respective opponents, all from Cal Poly.

Doubles action saw more victories for the Cougars, with No. 2 seed Craig and Price beating UCSB’s Jill Damion and Jordan Dockendorf in a tight 8-6 match in flight A.

Carney and Paul defeated their Cal Poly opponents in bracket B, battling Ashley Payne and Kathryn Webb for a 9-7 victory.

Ezhova and Huish lost their fight C match to Kelsey Knight and Chelsea Patton of Eastern Washington 8-5.

Price and Huish will play their bracket A and bracket C singles matches at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Carney and Paul’s second round doubles match will start at 9 a.m. Saturday and Craig and Price will play at 1 p.m.
