Doerr, Jones Advance at Regionals

LAS -- The ITA Mountain Region Championships opened with mixed results for the BYU women’s tennis team. Kristina Doerr and McCall Jones won their respective singles matches to advance to the Round of 32 while the rest of the team will continue in the consolation round.

Doerr, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, beat Caitlin Fluegge of Colorado State in straight sets after a first-round bye to make her way to the last 32. Jones, who owns the No. 3 seed, also enjoyed a first-round bye before a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

BYU’s remaining six players lost either their first or second round matches but five will resume play in the consolation round. Freshman Aubrey Paul defeated Utah State’s Carla Limon but fell to her next opponent from the University of Washington. Chie Hayasaka also recorded a win in her first match against USU’s Taylor Perry before losing to a foe from CSU.

In doubles action, Hayaska and partner Andie Young notched a 9-7 win in the first round. Jones and Megan Price and teammates Doerr and Romina Nedakovic had byes and will begin play Thursday.

The regional tournament continues at the Darling Tennis Center throughout the weekend. Thursday’s matches begin at 8 a.m. For updated draws and results, click here.
