BERKELEY -- Things looked up for the BYU women’s tennis team as they completed the second day of the Cal Nike Invitational. Players advanced in the consolation rounds of both singles and doubles, showing skill and mental toughness.

McCall Jones and Kristina Doerr resumed play in the Gold flight consolation round Saturday. Jones overtook her Saint Mary’s opponent 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to move to the next round. Doerr also won in straight sets to earn a place in the semifinals. Jones and Doerr were set to face each other in the consolation semis on the tournament’s final day but withdrew from Sunday play.

Senior Chie Hayasaka, the only Cougar left in the main draw of the Blue fight, fell to USC’s Cristala Andrews in the quarterfinals. Andie Young, who made it to the semifinals of the White flight, dropped her match to an opponent from Pacific.

Hayasaka combined with Elle Carney in doubles to clinch a place in the quarterfinals of the Blue flight main draw, but Long Beach State overpowered the duo 8-3 to end their campaign.

In the consolation round of the doubles Gold flight, Jones and fellow sophomore Megan Price and Doerr and Romina Nedakovic notched two victories each. Jones and Price defeated their challengers 8-2 and 8-4 to secure a spot in the finals. Doerr and Nedakovic turned in similar scores of 8-3 and 8-5 to join their teammates for the All-Cougar final. The pairs will not compete in that match because it is on Sunday.

The tournament will conclude Sunday at the Hellman and Channing Tennis Complexes but BYU will not compete.
