Cougars Put Reins on Cowgirls
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 13. 2006) -- The No. 27 BYU women's tennis team made quick work of its opponent Friday, beating Wyoming 7-0 in the first of three conference matches this week. The Cougars are now 16-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the Cowgirls are 8-13 overall and 0-7 in conference play.
The Cougars took little time to take the lead, moving in front 1-0 after superb doubles play. Olga Boulytcheva did not play in the match, which allowed other Cougars to step up and show what they were capable of. In doubles, Lauren Jones teamed with Junior Hanni Deters, and the duo didn't miss a beat. They defeated Patricia Chien and Michelle Brown 8-2, to help BYU clinch the doubles point. This was Deters' first appearance of the season for BYU.
The trend continued for the Cougars in singles as all but one Cougar won in straight sets. Lauren Jones played her third match of the season at number one singles, beating Karolina Rowinski 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Rana El Derwy, who has seen limited action this season, was also able to play because of Boulytcheva's absence, and she made the most of the opportunity. She defeated Amy Senko 7-5, 6-2 to net her third victory as a Cougar.
The win over Wyoming put the Cougars in great position for tomorrow's match with Colorado State. The match will also be played in Colorado Springs and begins at 10 a.m. Mountain Time.
