Cougars Win Over UNLV in Semis of MWC Tournament
SAN -- Fourth-seeded Brigham Young University upset top-seeded and 28th-ranked UNLV, 4-2, in the semifinal round of the 2003 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships on Friday at San Diego State. With the win, the Cougars improved to 13-10 overall.
Cougars Leeza Klempner and Dominique Reynolds picked up an 8-3 win in the No. 1 doubles spot, while Rebecca Pike and Olga Boulytcheva defeated UNLV?s Gyorgyi Zsiros and Amy Hadziomanovic in No. 3 pairs action to earn the doubles point for BYU.
In singles play, BYU?s Hadley Macfarlane, Rebecca Pike and Nicole Schneider were all winners in their respective matches. The Rebels? No. 1 and 2 seeds, Zsiros and Pauline Janus, each swept their competitors in two sets to earn two points for UNLV.
BYU advances to the championship round where the Cougars will face the winner of the San Diego State/New Mexico match. The tournament title match is set for tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the SDSU Courts.
