Chiew Defeats Perkins to Win Singles Championship At BYU Invitational

PROVO -- It was a battle of Cougars in the final day of competition at the BYU Invitational Tournament Saturday.

The Washington State Cougars faced the BYU Cougars in six of the eight finals of the women's tennis tournament held at the outdoor courts at BYU. The most notable, and the only one in which BYU came out victorious, was in the first flight where All-American Eline Chiew defeated Washington State's Erica Perkins 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, to take the championship.

The win was the third of the tournament for Chiew who defeated Therina Steenkamp of Weber State and Megan Payne of Utah before facing Perkins in the final.

Washington State came out ahead in the other five Cougar vs. Cougar match-ups. Melissa Pine defeated Liza Khoucloiarova 7-5, 6-3, in the fourth flight, Tamara Filipovic beat Dominique Reynolds in the fifth flight, Sara Burrows defeated Lu Oswald in the sixth, Kathleen Piennaar beat Shari Smith 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 in the seventh and Moniek Van de Ven defeated Jamie Parker 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in the eighth flight.

Wyoming's Sarah Kay won the second flight after Patrycia Gajdzik forfeited because of an injury. Washington State had another champion in the third flight where Ana Moora defeated Boise State's Beau Jones in a long match 7-6 (12-10), 6-3.

The BYU women's tennis team will next participate in the ITA Riviera All-American Hardcourt Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Oct. 19-24.
