Khoudoiarova Defeats Fifth-Seed, Three Cougars Remain In ITA Regional Tournament
SALT LAKE -- With a win over the fifth-seed in the singles tournament, freshman Liza Khoudoiarova joined two other Cougars in advancing to the round of 16 at the ITA Regional Tournament held in Salt Lake City.
Khoudoiarova defeated Anna Pampoulova of Kansas State 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to advance. Khoudoiarova reached the round of 32 by beating Marisko Steenkamp of Montana State 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round.
Joining Khoudoiarova in the round of 16 from BYU are seniors Gee Gee Garvin and Eline Chiew. Garvin defeated Sandra Wolfe of Denver University 6-4, 6-4, and followed that by beating Linn Ronnberg of Utah 6-1, 6-2.
Chiew, the second-seed in the tournament defeated Linda Faltynkova of Oklahoma State 6-2, 6-3. Her second round after defeating Dominika Gerwin of New Mexico 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Chiew will continue play in the round of 16 Friday when she plays 12th-seeded Dominique Lemperle of Colorado. Garvin is set to face Kansas's Tiffany Chang and Khoudoiarova will play 14th-seeded Dominika Olszewska of Oklahoma State.
The only Cougar in the main draw that lost in the first round was freshman Dominique Reynolds. Reynolds was defeated by Maria Galoustova of Oklahoma State 6-2, 6-3. She is now playing in the consolation bracket.
