Cougars Win Mountain West Conference Opener Over UNLV

PROVO -- Using strong depth in singles play, the BYU women's tennis team won its first home dual match of the season 5-4 over Mountain West Conference rival UNLV Friday in Provo.

The Cougars, now 2-3 on the season, used four singles wins to defeat the Rebels. Three of the wins were in the number three, four and five spots.

Seniors Kim Kelly and Tara Ferguson won the number three and number four positions and freshman Lu Oswald picked up the victory in number six singles, putting the Cougars ahead 4-2 after the singles matches.

"They're giving everything they've got," BYU coach Craig Manning said. "They were leaving it all on the court. The opposing coach said that he thought we could just flat out compete. Our girls worked hard today."
