BYU Loses Close Mountain West Match 5-4 At San Diego State

SAN -- Despite dominating play by Eline Chiew and Jodi Richardson, the BYU women's tennis team, ranked 41st in the country, lost to No. 43 San Diego State 5-4 in San Diego Saturday.

Chiew, ranked 58th in the nation in singles, defeated Whitney Wells 6-4, 7-6 (5) in number one singles. She also teamed with freshman Lu Oswald to defeat Lisa Papi and Katja Karrento 8-6 in number two doubles.

Richardson also played well for the Cougars. She teamed with senior Kim Kelly to defeat Wells and Laura Aguero 8-5 in number one doubles. She also defeated Aguero 6-2, 6-4 in number two singles.

However, the Aztecs won every other match of the day to take the 5-4 victory. Kelly lost the number three singles match 6-4, 6-1 to Karrento while freshman Liza Khoudoiarova lost at number four singles 6-3, 6-0 to Lindsey Hedberg.

The victory was secured for San Diego State when Hedberg and teammate Katey Becker defeated Khoudoiarova and classmate Dominique Reynolds 8-6 in number three doubles.

The Cougars will next face Utah in Salt Lake City Mar. 31 at 5 p.m.

2. Chiew/Oswald (BYU) def. Papi/Karrento, 8-6

3. Hedberg/Baker (SDSU) def. Khoudoiarova/Reynolds, 8-6
