Women Tennis Players Defeat Wisconsin In Easy Fashion
Provo, Utah (Feb. 2, 2001) Playing their fourth straight tennis match at home looked easy for BYU's women's tennis team, as they easily defeated Wisconsin 7-0, Friday.
The victory gives the women's tennis team an overall record of 4-1 on the season.
BYU once again had an early advantage in the match after winning all three doubles matches for the 1-0 lead. At the number one position the Jodi Richardson and Brooke Ferney duo battled hard for the 9-8 (7-4) win over Wisconsin's April Gabler and Katie Dougherty. In the other two doubles matches, the Cougars had an 8-1 win at the number two spot and a 8-3 victory at number three doubles.
Head coach Craig Manning changed the singles lineup, pulling out an injured Richardson from the number one spot, and giving Brooke Ferney the notch at the top position in the lineup. Ferney came out with strong play to defeated Wisconsin's Vanessa Rauv, 6-1, 6-2.
"I thought we concentrated very well today and we were focused. We needed to have everyone put in their best effort and that's exactly what everyone did, so I'm extremely pleased," said coach Manning after the match.
Other BYU winners included Dominique Reynolds, at the number two singles spot followed by Lu Oswald at the three position , with teammates Lindsay Ferrell winning at the number four singles, followed by Elyse Jensen in the number five singles and Liza Khoudoivora rounding out the singles lineup in the number six spot.
The Cougars take to the road next, with a dual match against former WAC foe TCU on Feb. 8 in Dallas.
