Women Netters Win Close Match

PROVO -- Just one day after a 7-0 defeat at the hands of No. 1 Stanford, the BYU women's tennis team bounced back to defeat San Diego State, 4-3 at the Fertitta Tennis complex in Las Vegas on Friday afternoon.

The Cougars won the doubles point with Jodi Richardson and Brooke Ferney winning a close match against Silvia Tornier and Lindsey Hedberg at the No. 1 spot, 9-8 (4), and Lu Oswald and Lindsay Ferrell defeating Erin Polowski and Katja Karrento at the No. 3 spot, 8-2.

"We played well," said BYU coach Craig Manning. "We bounced back from the defeat on Thursday with some clutch performances in doubles and singles. Against Stanford (on Thursday) we played tough and I think the girls realized that they weren't that far off from the No. 1 team in the country."

In singles, BYU won at the No. 1, 2 and 4 spots to take the victory. Jodi Richardson defeated Tornier, 6-4, 6-1 in the top spot. Last week's conference player of the week, Dominique Reynolds, defeated Whitney Wells, 6-1, 6-4 at the two spot.

BYU will play on Saturday against UNLV at 10 a.m. in Las Vegas before they return home for a three-match home stand to finish the season starting on April 7 against Utah.
