Men And Women Sweep Conference Tournaments
PROVO -- The BYU men's and women's tennis team swept the Mountain West Conference Tournaments on Saturday. As the No. 4 seed, the men's team defeated No. 3 UNLV, 4-0, and the first-seeded women's team defeated No. 2 San Diego State, 4-3.
WOMEN'S
The women started the match by taking the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to win the doubles point. Jodi Richardson, the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, and Brooke Ferney defeated Lindsey Hedberg and Silvia Tornier, 8-4 in the top spot.
In singles, the Aztecs fought the Cougars all the way to the end. Richardson won at the No. 1 spot, defeating Hedberg, 6-2, 6-0. San Diego State won at the No. 2 spot, where Tornier blanked Dominique Reynolds.
San Diego State took two more singles points, winning at No. 4 and No. 5, and BYU won at No. 6, tying the score at three points a piece. The deciding match was at the No. 3 spot between BYU"s Lu Oswald and SDSU's Whitney Wells. Oswald pulled out the victory for the Cougars, winning a close match, 7-5, 6-4.
MEN'S
After stunning the top-seeded Aztecs on Friday , the No. 4 seeded men's team defeated No. 3 UNLV on Saturday for the championship in Salt Lake City. The Cougars started the match by taking two of three in doubles to claim the point, then went on to win their first three singles matches at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 spots for the 4-0 victory and the Mountain West Conference Championship.
Carlos Lozano defeated Thomas Schneiter, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 2 spot, while Eric Nyman won at No. 3 and Michael Gysens won at No. 5. The other three matches were not finished.
Because of the victories, both the men and the women will automatically advance to the NCAA Tournament to be held on May 11 and 12, and 18-29.
