Cougars Rally to Defeat No. 12 Washington

Provo, Utah (March 2, 2002) -- After being down 0-3, the No. 52 BYU women's tennis team completed a furious comeback to upend No. 12 Washington 4-3 on Saturday. With the win, BYU improves to 4-6, while the loss drops the Huskies to 10-2.

BYU fell quickly behind, as Washington, which at 10-1 had equaled its best start ever, swept all three doubles matches. The Huskies then proceeded to take the first two singles matches, as Lindsay Ferrell was downed by Claire Carter (6-1, 6-3) in the No. 1 spot, and Brooke Beverly fell to Ilona Kordonskaya (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2.

With BYU trailing 3-0, and in peril of losing the match, the Cougars slowly chipped into the Washington lead. In the No. 3 spot Lu Oswald started the BYU rally, as she defeated Dea Sumantri 6-2, 6-3. Liza Khoudoidrova swept Andrea Coulter 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4, and Dominique Reynolds knotted the match at 3-3 with a straight set 7-5, 6-3 win over Kathy Chi in the No. 5 spot.

The deciding match pitted BYU freshman Nicole Schneider against Washington's Erin Hoe. Schneider had only seen action in the No. 6 spot all season, and had struggled with a 1-6 mark. After losing the first set 6-2, Schneider took the next two sets 7-5, 7-5 in sealing the win for the Cougars.

The Cougars will continue their current homestand with a series against No. 27 Washington State on Monday. Play is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (MST).
