BYU Gets Back to Winning Ways, Overpowers SMU

PROVO -- With strong efforts coming in both doubles and singles play, the BYU women's tennis team knocked off SMU 6-1 Monday night. The Cougars (5-7, 1-0) swept the doubles and only lost one singles match to get back to their winning ways at home.

"We played great," BYU head coach Craig Manning said. "We played well in doubles and we played well in singles. The effort was just outstanding."

BYU got off to a great start in doubles play, winning all three matches in convincing fashion. Brooke Beverley and Dominique Reynolds won 8-4 at No. 1. The Cougars took the other two matches 8-1, with Lindsay Ferrell and Lu Oswald teaming up at No. 2 and Elizaveta Khoudoiarova and Nicole Schneider winning at No. 3.

In singles play, Ferrell got it going at No. 1, winning 6-4, 6-3. The win marked BYU's first win at the No. 1 singles position this season. Oswald, Khoudoiarova and Reynolds each won their matches in straight sets, continuing hot streaks for all three players. Schneider won her match at No. 6 in three sets, the third set being a 10-point tiebreaker.

"We worked on being more aggressive and coming into the net, and I think we all did that," Manning said.

BYU has now won three of four matches in its current homestand and four of five at home on the season. The Cougars will continue play at home this weekend, with three matches in four days. BYU will take on Kansas State Friday, Rice Saturday and TCU Monday to complete the seven-game homestand.
