Huang and Moore undefeated in doubles play as Cougars compete in ITA Bedford Cup

USAFA ACADEMY, Colo.- BYU women's tennis competed in the ITA Bedford Cup last weekend against schools from the intermountain west including in-state rivals Weber State and Utah State.

Doubles

Sophomore Bobo Huang and freshman Emmie Moore went undefeated in doubles play all the way to the championship round defeating Weber State's Ana Morett and Kenadee Semenik 8-4 in round one, Colorado State's Emily Dush and Sarka Richterova 8-3 in round two, Boise State's Ana Conde Vendrell and Shauna Heffernan in round three. 

“First tournament back is solely to learn and get better. It was a great weekend to see where we are at and what we need to work on moving forward," head coach Holly Hasler said. "It was fun to see new freshman, Emmie Moore, battle through some tough singles wins in the top draw and dominate in the top doubles draw.”

Junior Xenia de Luna and sophomore Avery Pope finished second in their doubles draw, defeating Idaho State's Olivia Mikkelson and Maddie Dibble 8-4 in round one, and Idaho's Jayanne Palma and Selin Sepken 8-5 in round two. But eventually fell to Air Force's Shailla Alda and Abby Cotuna 8-4 in the final round. 

Sophomore Madison Smith junior Kara Wheatley competed against New Mexico State's Anna Pinaieva and Lisa Zhu in the first round and were defeated 7-6 (7), and fell to CSU's Luana Avelar and Radka Buzkova 8-2 in the back draw. Smith and Wheatley went on to defeat WSU's Megan Davies and Megan Lombardi 8-7 (1) in another match. 

Freshman Tina Li and senior Helen Jiao were defeated by Denver's Claudia Martinez De Velasco and Andrea Burguete Beltran 8-6 in the first round, defeated NMSU's Dora Kurdi  and Natsuki Nishimura 8-5, and fell to AFA's Andrea Le and Van Houweling 8-6 in the back draw.

Singles

Helen Jiao, Xenia De Luna, Emmie Moore, and Madison Smith all won two of their three singles matches in various draws.

Moore defeated NMSU's Pinaieva 6-3, 6-3 in the first round, but fell to BSU's Pauline Ernstberger 6-2, 7-6 (2) in round two, but went on to defeat WSU's Morett 6-3, 6-4 in a back draw.

Jiao was defeated by CSU's Dush in the first round 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, but went on to defeat AF's Alexis Odom 6-4, 6-4 and BSU's Vendrell 6-4, 6-3 in the back draw.

Smith defeated BSU's Ryan Kershner 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, and fell to AFA's Kaleigh Yun-Thayer 6-2, 7-6 (6) in round two, but defeated CSU's Ky Ecton 6-3, 6-4 in the back draw.

De Luna was defeated by Utah State's Sidnee Lavatai 6-2, 6-2, and eventually defeated NMSU's Kurdi 6-4, 6-0 and Idaho's Nicole Horacek  6-4, 1-0 ret in the back draw.

BYU will prepare next to compete in the Cal Fall Invitational that will take place Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Berkeley, Calif. The full results of the ITA Bedford Cup can be viewed below.
