BYU Women's Tennis Sweeps Grand Canyon 7-0

PHOENIX, Arizona- In its fourth sweep of the season, the BYU women’s tennis team secured a 7-0 win against Grand Canyon University at the GCU Tennis Facility Friday.

"We’ve been preparing all week for our adjustment to playing outside and in slower conditions," said BYU head coach Holly Hasler. "The girls adjusted well and fought hard today. We are anxious to start conference play tomorrow and are excited for our opportunity to be up against Pepperdine."

Starting off strong in doubles play, doubles duo Emilee Astle and Kara Lin defeated their opponents 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. No. 3 doubles partners Leah Heimuli and Madison Smith also came away with a dominating set win of 6-1 to secure the doubles point for the Cougars.  In a close battle at No. 1 doubles, Anastasia Abramyan and Bobo Huang fell 6-4.

With the Cougars ahead by one, Astle and Lin both came out on top with strong wins at No. 4 and 6 singles. Junior Emilee Astle won her match 6-0, 6-3, and at No. 4, and Sophomore Kara Lin finished with a score of 6-2, 6-0 to give the Cougars their second and third points.

BYU kept its momentum going with another solid win for Senior, Heimuli who defeated her GCU opponent 6-2, 6-4 to confirm the match win for the Cougars. Smith added another point for BYU with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.

Sophomore Abramyan defeated GCU’s Schmidt in the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-2 adding another point to the BYU stat line. In a close match at No. 3 singles, Huang came out on top in three sets, finalizing the 7-0 win for the Cougars.

The Cougars will play another road match tomorrow against Pepperdine at 2 p.m. PST at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, California.
