BYU beats Utah State in 5-2 comeback

LOGAN, Utah – BYU women’s tennis got their sixth straight win over Utah State after defeating the Aggies 5-2 on Friday. The Cougars improve to 5-7 on the season as they look to open conference play next week.

Utah State kicked things off by winning the doubles point, going 2-1 in the matches. BYU junior Emilee Astle and sophomore Kara Lin recorded BYU’s only doubles win, defeating Sidnee Lavatai and Lisa Kung 6-2. Senior Anastasia Abramyan and freshman Bobo Huang fell to Gabrielle Dekkers and Annaliese County 6-2, and senior Leah Heimuli and junior Helen Jiao dropped their match 6-4 to Zeynep Naz Ozturk and Carolina Millan.

BYU came back in the singles matches, picking up all five of the team’s points. Abramyan pulled out the Cougars’ first win, defeating Kung in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Heimuli tallied BYU’s second win as she beat Millan 6-3, 6-1. The Cougars did not relent, recording their third point as Huang came out victorious over Naz Ozturk 6-4, 6-0. BYU hammered in the final nail for the win with Astle’s comeback win over Zara Ryan 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. The Cougars recorded one more win to earn their fifth and final point as Lin beat Lavatai 6-2, 6-4. Jiao had BYU’s only loss in singles falling in three sets 6-4, 6-3, 0-1.

The Cougars next travel to take on Grand Canyon on March 11 at 10 a.m. MST, followed by Pepperdine on March 12 at 2 p.m. PST.
