Cougars split Bay Area road trip following loss to San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – BYU women’s tennis (15-8, 4-3 WCC) dropped its final road match of the season in a 6-1 defeat to San Francisco at the Olympic Club on Saturday afternoon.
The Dons picked up the doubles point early, earning wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Anastasia Abramyan and Helen Jiao picked up the win in the No. 1 spot, but it wasn’t enough, as San Francisco began the match with a 1-0 advantage.
Abramyan topped off an impressive week with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mya Bui at No. 1 singles. Abramyan went a perfect 2-0 in singles matches while also going 1-0 in doubles play over the weekend. The rest of the day went San Francisco’s way, however, with the Dons sweeping the remainder of the matches.
Madeline Wanlass was bested by Caragh Courtney, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 6 spot, and Kara Lin was defeated, 6-2, 6-4, just moments later. Rita Colyer sealed the win for San Francisco, earning the Dons’ fourth point in a 6-4, 6-4 win over Emilee Astle.
The final two matches of the day each went into the third set, but the Dons were just able to outlast the Cougars in both. Leah Heimuli’s battle fell short, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and after dropping the first set 6-2, Jiao evened things up in the second with a 7-5 victory. In the third set, San Francisco’s Chiho Mushika had just enough to pull out a 6-4 victory.
BYU will hold its senior day on Friday, April 23, in the regular season finale against No. 6 Pepperdine at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 11 a.m. MDT. Live stats can be found on the BYU women’s tennis website.
