BYU Looks to Rebound in Oregon

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s tennis will be back on the road to face the Oregon Ducks (4-1) on Friday and Seattle Redhawks (0-3) on Saturday at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Oregon. The Cougars are coming off a pair of losses at Colorado and at Denver.

BYU Notes (6-3, 0-0 West Coast Conference)

The Cougars are 6-3, most recently falling at Denver, 6-1.
BYU has wins over Boise State, Sacramento State, Fresno State, Dixie State (twice) and Weber State. The Cougars have losses to Denver, Colorado and Cal Poly.
The Cougars are coming off back-to-back losses for the first time since last February. A year ago, BYU answered, rattling off five wins in six matches before the season was cut short due to covid.
BYU is led by senior Madeline Almeida Wanlass and sophomore Emilee Astle. The two combine for an 11-2 record in singles matches, including an impressive 5-0 start for Wanlass.
BYU’s underclassmen have performed well so far this season, going 21-11 in singles play. Newcomers Xenia de Luna (3-0) and Elizabeth Tullis (2-0) are yet to lose a singles match. Sophmore Helen Jiao has the second highest winning percentage on the team with at least six matches played at .625.

Oregon Notes (4-1, 0-0 Pac-12)

Oregon is 4-1, with its most recent win coming over Eastern Washington, 6-1.
Oregon has wins over Eastern Washington, Portland, Idaho and Portland State. The Ducks’ loss came on the road in the season opener at Gonzaga.
The Ducks are led by Janice Tjen and Uxia Martinez. The two are each 5-0 in singles competition and are a combined 7-0 in doubles play. Oregon has only lost one doubles set through five matches.
Oregon is a perfect 4-0 at home this season after opening up with a loss at Gonzaga.
The last meeting between BYU and Oregon came on Mar. 14, 2015. No. 52 BYU defeated Oregon, 4-3, in Provo. BYU leads the all-time series 4-2.

Seattle Notes (0-3, 0-0 WAC)

Seattle is 0-3 after losing to Portland State last week, 6-1.
The Redhawks are looking for their first win of the year. They have losses to Portland State and Washington (twice).
Seattle earned its first point of the season on Friday against Portland State after clinching the doubles point but lost all six singles matches.
The lone meeting between BYU and Seattle came on Feb. 23, 2019. The Cougars came away with a 4-3 victory on the campus of Washington State.
