Malykh earns WCC All-Academic Team honors, three others named honorable mention

Malykh gets academic honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Senior Polina Malykh was named to the 2019-20 West Coast Conference Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team while three of her teammates earned honorable mention, the league announced Friday.

Malykh, a public relations major, had the highest GPA on the team at 3.87.

Kate Cusick Truman finished her senior campaign with a 3.41 GPA in communications. Teammate Leah Heimuli was next with a 3.29 GPA in sociology while Madeline Almeida Wanlass earned a 3.20 GPA in family and consumer science education. The trio was named honorable mention.

Malykh guided the team to an 8-3 record before the remainder of the season was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She tallied a 6-3 overall record at the No. 3 singles position including a 3-0 run. Malykh went on an eight-match doubles win streak at the No. 2 position with Emilee Astle and finished the year with a 10-2 record.

Truman compiled a 6-10 singles record playing at the No. 1 position while advancing to the doubles round of the ITA Fall Regional Championships with Heimuli. The duo concluded the year on a three-match win streak.

Heimuli advanced to the doubles round of 16 at the ITA Regional Championships in the fall and went 13-10 in singles play.

Wanlass finished in the round of 16 in the ITA Gold Singles bracket at the Cal Fall Invitational. She tallied an 8-7 overall singles record playing in No. 3, 5, and 6 singles.

At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.
