SAN DIEGO – The BYU women’s tennis team dropped a 0-4 match to No. 37 San Diego on Saturday.

“San Diego played very well today,” Head Coach Holly Parkinson Hasler said. “It was definitely tough having one day to adjust to sea level, and balls were landing short. We are on a run of California matches so hopefully, we can feel better adjusted.”

San Diego came out to take the advantage, winning the doubles point due to No. 2 and No. 3 doubles wins. BYU Duo Taylah Beckman and Samantha Smith fell 1-6 in their match versus Kati Kukaras and Gemma Garcia. Madeline Almeida and Polina Malykh were also defeated in a 1-6 matchup against Daniela Morales and Maria Tyrina.

Despite their efforts, the Cougars lost three-straight singles matches to give the Toreros the match. BYU’s Kate Cusick lost 4-6, 1-6 in No. 1 singles to Colling. The Cougars’ Katie Fitt dropped a 0-6, 1-6 match to Torres in No. 5 singles. BYU’s Smith put up a fight in No. 6, but fell in a three-set match, 2-6, 6-1, 0-6, to San Diego’s Tyrina.

Polina Malykh, Anastasia Abramyan and Madeline Almeida left unfinished matches down in their first and second sets.

The Cougars continue their stretch on the road at San Francisco on Friday, April 5, at 12 p.m. PDT at the Olympic Club.
