Ware shines as Cougars finish play at Jack Kramer Invitational

Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. – The BYU women’s tennis team concluded the fall season with four players competing in the Jack Kramer Tennis Invitational held Nov. 3-6 in Rolling Hills Estates, California.

“We really worked a lot on doubles going into this tournament and it paid off,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “Savannah had a great run in this tournament both in singles and doubles. Polina also had a good tournament and is starting to really find her game and gain confidence.”

Savannah Ware, a senior, reached the semifinal of the consolation bracket after an early first round loss, 6-3, 6-4, to UCLA's Terri Flemming. In the first round of consolation play, Ware defeated South Carolina's Alison Mills, 6-3, 6-1. Ware advanced to defeat Cal State Fullerton's Sarah Nuno in dramatic fashion, winning 3-6, 6-4, 10-8, before defeating Jillian Rooney of Northwestern in the quarterfinal, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. 

Ware fell in the semifinal matchup to Northwestern's Rheeya Doshi 6-1, 6-0. 

In doubles, Ware and teammate Natella Nabieva reached the semifinals of the back draw after falling 8-4 to Fresno State's to Oliva Noble and Juliane Triebe. In the first consolation round, Ware and Nabieva defeated Georgetown's Casey Marx and Sara Swift, 8-4, and advanced to defeat South Carolina's Mills and Hannah Templeton, 8-5. The duo advanced to the semifinal match against UCLA's Miller and Wiley but withdrew from the Sunday match.

Also competing for the Cougars, Mayci Jones and Polina Malykh defeated UCLA's Cassidy Branstine and Stephanie Nyguen, 8-2, before falling 8-5 to Northwestern's Doshi and Rooney.  

In singles play, Malykh defeated Cal State Fullerton's Danielle Pham 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round before falling to Pepperdine's Dzina Milovanovic, 7-6, 7-5. 

The Cougars open the 2017 season at the SMU Hidden Dual held Jan. 13-16 in Dallas, Texas.
