Poulsen clinches home win over USF in WCC opener

PROVO, Utah - Behind a strong performance from senior Nicolette Poulsen, BYU women's tennis defeated WCC opponent San Francisco 5-2, on Tuesday at the Indoor tennis courts.

"I'm very happy with the way we bounced back after our last match," BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. "We looked like a new team today. We fought hard on every court and played with confidence and that made the difference today."

Poulsen clinched both the doubles and singles points for BYU (2-7, 1-0 WCC) starting with a victory at No. 2 doubles along with teammate junior Savannah Ware. The duo defeated San Francisco's (0-9, 0-2 WCC) Hanna Borjensen and Genevieve McConnel, 6-2. Playing at third doubles, Erica Chichoni recorded her first doubles victory of the season along with partner Natella Nabieva, beating USF's Sofia Holmberg and Shanna Dos Santos, 6-1.

In singles competition, the Cougars continued to roll with Ware finishing first after a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles over the Dons' Dos Santos. Toby Miclat finished next, giving BYU a 3-0 lead after a 6-3, 6-4 victory at second singles over USF's Thyra Taune.

Poulsen clinched the match for the Cougars, defeating McCloskey in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. The victory puts Poulsen just one win shy of 40 career singles victories.

San Francisco scored its first point of the match when Andrea Ka defeated BYU's Mayci Jones at No. 1 singles in a three-set battle, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

In the final two singles matches, Nabieva recorded a strong 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Dons' Sofia Holmberg at No. 5 singles. Playing at the No. 6 spot, Chichoni fell to USF's Borjenson 6-7, 6-2, 10-3.

BYU will travel to face Portland on Friday, March 4, at 12 p.m. in its next WCC match. Fans can follow the match live.
