Cougars fall to No. 36 Arizona in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 65 BYU women’s tennis dropped a close one 4-3 against No. 38 Arizona at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson Friday night.

“We didn’t come out in doubles with enough energy and Arizona capitalized on that,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “We were able to pull out three singles matches so we definitely saw how important doubles is today.”

The Wildcats came out strong in doubles to earn the doubles point. Arizona’s Lauren Marker and Inge Hendrikx outplayed Nicolette Tran and Savannah Ware to an 8-2 victory. The Wildcats clinched the point when Laura Oldham and Devin Chypyha defeated Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Morgan Anderson-Littlewood 8-6. Sophomores Mayci Jones and Toby Miclat were down 7-3 when their match was called.

Tran, Miclat and Ware were all able to earn points for the Cougars by beating Oldham (5-7, 6-4, 10-6), Shayne Austin (6-4, 6-4) and Hendrickx (6-2, 6-4), respectively. Jones fell at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-0 to No. 96 ranked Marker and Sheehan-Dizon also fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to ranked opponent, No. 113 Briar Preston. Chypyha clinched the match for Arizona with her 6-4, 6-3 victory over Anderson-Littlewood.

BYU travels to Tempe, Ariz. tomorrow to face No. 27 Arizona State at 12 p.m. MST.
