ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Sophomores Toby Miclat and Savannah Ware led BYU women’s tennis on a successful day one of the ITA Regional Championships in New Mexico on Wednesday. Both Cougars won convincingly in their first-round matches to advance into the second round.

“We had a great showing today and played some really good tennis,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “The girls are looking confident so it will be exciting to see how we continue to do through the tournament.”

Ware played Charlotte Derbyshire of Denver and won in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Miclat also won in only two sets without dropping a game, beating UTEP’s Anastasiya Sylenko 6-0, 6-0. Joining Ware and Miclat in the second round on Thursday are Mayci Jones, Nicolette Tran, Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Morgan Anderson-Littlewood.

Jones and Tran both received first-round byes as the No. 3 and No. 9 seeds, respectively. Sheehan-Dizon won her first-round match against Chrissie Hoolahan of the University of Northern Colorado 7-5, 6-4. Anderson-Littlewood beat Sierra Stapper of the Air Force Academy 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Katie Fitt fell in her opening match to Susana Alcaraz of New Mexico State.

Sheehan-Dizon and Anderson-Littlewood teamed up in doubles to win their first-round match against a doubles team from UTEP 8-7. The other two BYU doubles teams, Jones/Miclat and Ware/Tran, received first-round byes and will be on the court Thursday in the second round.
