Cougars finish strong at Cal Nike Invitational
Berkeley, Calif.– BYU women’s tennis concluded play at the Cal Nike Invitational with more strong performances. Junior Nicolette Tran and sophomore Savannah Ware led the way for the Cougars while maintaining their perfect record as a doubles team.
After winning the doubles championship last weekend at the BYU Invitational Tran and Ware advanced to the doubles final of the ITA Gold main draw Sunday. Due to the BYU policy that prohibits teams from competing on Sunday, the Cougars will not participate in the match but remain undefeated as a doubles team on the season.
“Savannah and Nicolette had another great tournament,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “Katie won all her singles matches and we had some really good tight matches this weekend.”
Freshman Katie Fitt continued to win in the ITA White singles draw, advancing into the semifinals. Fitt beat Sac State’s Ana Loaiza 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and is the only BYU player to advance to the semifinals in the main draw in singles. However, Fitt will not participate because of BYU's policy to not compete on Sunday.
Mayci Jones, Ware, Tran and Morgan Anderson-Littlewood all played in the round robin singles draw Saturday and won. Jones outplayed Thyra Taune of San Francisco (1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6)), Ware beat UC Davis’ Tiffan Pham (6-2, 6-0), Tran ousted Anna Nau of Sac State (6-3, 7-6 (5)) and Anderson-Littlewood won in her match against Kristy Jorgenson of UC Davis (6-1, 6-1). Meghan Sheehan-Dizon lost in the quarterfinals of the ITA Blue consolation draw to Kassidy Jump of ASU (6-4, 6-3).
The other Cougar doubles teams were also in action Saturday. Sheehan-Dizon and doubles partner, Anderson-Littlewood, lost in the main draw quarterfinals for the ITA Gold draw to Jana McCord and Parminder Kaur of Saint Mary’s (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (4)). The duo of Jones and Toby Miclat also lost in their quarterfinal to Cal’s Lynn Chi and Zsofi Susanyi (6-2, 7-6 (5)). The freshman team of Fitt and Brittanie Eraso lost in the semifinals of ITA White doubles to Saint Mary’s Catherine Leduc and Emma Critser (6-0, 6-3).
“It was a good weekend overall,” Jones-Spencer said. “We will take a lot of good away from this tournament and fine tune our games for our next tournament.”
BYU will compete at ITA All-American Tournament early next week then return to Utah to participate in the Utah State Hidden Duel Oct. 3-4.
