PROVO, Utah – Cougar women’s tennis begins fall play this week against Utah State and Wyoming in the BYU Invitational at BYU. Play will start Thursday Sept. 18 and run through Saturday Sept. 20. Doubles play will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday and the first matches of singles competition follows at 11:00 a.m.
“We are looking forward to start competing again,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. “Our Invitational is a great tournament for our girls to get in match shape and play some competitive tennis against a very good group of players.”
Coming off their best season since 2007, the Cougars will build on a 2013-2014 campaign that saw them take second in the West Coast Conference, finishing with an 8-1 conference record while being undefeated at home with an 8-0 mark. Reigning WCC Coach of the Year, Jones-Spencer leads her team into their fall tournament schedule with six returning players from last year’s squad.
The senior duo of Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Morgan Anderson-Littlewood will look to use their experience to provide the Cougars with leadership this season. The two teamed up for doubles last season to earn All-WCC Honorable Mention in doubles after going 10-1 overall and 7-1 in conference. They will begin this season's campaign in the second round at 11 a.m. after a first-round bye. Sheehan-Dizon is also the No. 2 seed in singles and will play her first singles match at 3:30 p.m. Anderson-Littlewood plays Katie Sweet of Utah State in the first round at 1 p.m.
Sophomores Mayci Jones, Toby Miclat and Savannah Ware will look to build on impressive freshmen campaigns this season. All three were recognized on all-conference teams for singles last season. Jones earned a spot on the All-WCC Second Team and Miclat and Ware were both All-WCC Honorable Mentions. Ware also received All-WCC Honorable Mention in doubles with her playing partner, Nicolette Tran. The doubles team of Tran and Ware also received a first-round bye and will play their first match at 11 a.m. Ware will be playing Maggie O'Meara of Utah State in the first round of singles at 1 p.m. while Tran received a first-round bye in the singles bracket and will move to the second round at 3:30 p.m.
Sophomore Demi Daniels and freshmen Katie Fitt and Brittanie Eraso also play in the first round of the singles competition at 1 p.m. Fitt and Eraso will team up for a double match against a team from Utah State in the first round at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Following the BYU Invitational, the Cougars will travel to Berkley, Calif. to play in the Cal Nike Invitational Sept. 25-27 at Cal Berkley.
