PROVO, Utah -- No. 51 BYU women’s tennis swept the weekly honors as Toby Miclat was named Singles Player of the Week and the team of Nicolette Tran and Savannah Ware were named Doubles Team of the Week, the West Coast Conference announced Wednesday.
Freshman Miclat has been one of the key contributors in BYU's 3-0 West Coast Conference start and 7-6 record overall. Last week at No. 4 singles, she went 3-0 to help the Cougars to three straight wins, including upsets over No. 62 Marshall and No. 38 Saint Mary's. Miclat improved to 9-4 in dual match play and 20-7 overall.
Against Marshall, the Southern California native fell behind early as she dropped the first set to Anna Pomyatinskaya before rallying in the final two to clinch the match, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In BYU's second WCC match, Miclat pulled out a three-set victory over Pacific's Francis Dean, 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (10-4). In the final match of the weekend, the freshman defeated No. 82 Catherine Leduc of Saint Mary's, 6-4, 6-4, stretching the match lead to 3-1 while setting up teammate Savannah Ware for the clincher. The 5-2 win over the Gaels is the first over a top-40 team since 2007 for the Cougars.
BYU's new combination at No. 2 doubles proved fruitful as the sophomore Tran and freshman Ware helped the team win the doubles point in WCC wins over Pacific and No. 38 Saint Mary's.
The duo helped the Cougars swing momentum against the Tigers by securing the doubles point with an 8-2 win over Iveta Masarova and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz. The pair also helped BYU get a jump in the upset win over the Gaels by defeating Jade Frampton and Catherine Leduc 8-1.
The Cougars will be on the road this weekend against against Loyola Marymount Friday at 1:30 p.m. PDT and No. 36 Pepperdine Saturday at 11 a.m.
