PROVO, Utah--Day two of the BYU Invitational ended with the stage being set for an all-BYU singles final and the Cougars taking the doubles title, Friday.
"It was another great day for us," BYU coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. "We had a few tight matches, but we're excited for an all-BYU singles final."
Both BYU doubles teams advanced to the final match with the Desiree Tran and Nicolette Tran dominating their opponent, Wyoming’s Alma Espinosa and Silviya Zhelyazkova, 8-0. In the other semifinal match, freshman Mayci Jones and junior Meghan Sheehan-Dizon clinched a solid victory, 8-6, over Christa Gecheva and Jessica Parizher also of Wyoming.
Jones and Sheehan-Dizon faced the Tran sisters in a close title match. Through the first three matches, the Tran team had only lost 4 games. Jones and Sheehan-Dizon came out with energy to clinch the doubles, 8-6. This is the fourth title in the past five years for BYU.
In singles, freshman Savannah Ware secured a spot in the singles title match with a 6-1, 3-0(ret), victory over teammate Desiree Tran. Ware’s first match of the day was her true test. In the semifinal match, she faced fellow freshman teammate Jones. Ware came up with the victory in a tough match, 7-5, 7-6(5).
In the other semifinal match, Meghan Sheehan-Dizon defeated Veronica Popovici of Wyoming in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. The win ensures a second title for the Cougars in this year's invitational with Saturday's final match between teammates Sheehan-Dizon and Ware determining the winner.
In consolation doubles, BYU’s Toby Miclat and Savannah Ware advanced to the semifinals with an 8-4 win over Madeline Skaras and Afton Staheli of Southern Utah.
Morgan Anderson and Mackenna Maddox also advanced 8-4, but then fell to Dorottya Jonas and Veronica Popovici of Wyoming, 8-6.
Tournament play resumes on Saturday with consolation matches beginning at 8 a.m. MT and the singles final scheduled for 10 a.m.
Tournament results can be seen on the USTA website.
