Both Men And Women In First After Day One

PROVO -- After day one of the Pacific Invitational, BYU men and women are both in first, tallying 509 and 445 points, respectively, in events one through 13.

“We have a lot of new recruits that we expect to do well this season,” BYU head coach Tim Powers said. “This invite is a great opportunity for our swimmers to face really good competition.”

Both the women's and men's relay teams took over the first event of the invite, placing first in the 200 yard medley relay.

The women’s team consisted of Candice Smith, Sara Jayne Baldwin, Aleesha Miller and Kim Welch; their final time for the event was 1:45.57. Christian Keil, Vytenis Slenys, Jake Taylor and Ryan Krause were the members of the men’s team who recorded a time of 1:33.54.

The men’s team had a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 free with John Kendrick in first clocking in at 1:41.46, Keil in second with 1:41.88 and McKay King in third with 1:42.50.

Senior Rachel Grant and freshman Allie Dodds took first and second in the 400 IM with times of 4:19.12 and 4:29.45, respectively. In the same event, the men’s freshmen swimmers contributed the first three places with Steven Richards in first with 4:09.00 and Rafael Alfaro and Dallin Johnson taking second and third with times of 4:07.49 and 4:08.47, respectively.

In the women’s 100 breaststroke, Baldwin placed first with a time of 1:04.29, teammate Miller followed closely with a time of 1:04.51. For the men’s team, Slenys touched in at first with a time of 57.64.

Both the men’s and women’s 400 freestyle relay teams took first with times of 3:08.04 and 3:28.81. The women’s team consisted of Grant, Baldwin, Taryn Toolson and Miller while swimmers for the men’s team were Taylor, Keil, Krause and King.

In the last event of the day, swimmers from the men’s and women’s team each took the first three places of the 1650 yard free.

Freshman Allie Dodds took first with a time of 17:14.10, Alina Fong had a time of 17:16.37 for second and Amy Xu took third with 17:21.78.

Kendrick touched in at 16:05.72 for first in the 1650 free while Johnson placed second with 16:09.70 and Chad Fong recorded a time of 16:33.75 for third.
