Cougars gain ground on second day of CSCAA National Invitational Championship
ELKHART, Indiana — Day two action of the CSCAA National Invitational Championship came to an end Friday evening, with 12 of BYU's 14 traveling athletes competing in a variety of events, placing the men in 12th with 157 points, and the women in 36th with 48.5 points.
The prelim events started with the men, beginning with Max Cannon representing the team in the 400-yard IM. There, he swam a 3:57.95 to place 22nd amongst all competitors. Addie Richards of the women's team also competed in the 400 IM event, swimming a 4:25.80 to come in 19th place.
The 100-yard butterfly saw swimmers Jacob Ballard and Andrew Eliason compete in the event. Ballard went on to swim a 21st place 48.26, while Eliason would come in 33rd, posting a 48.85. Abraham Zimmerman also competed in the 100 fly, finishing in 57th with a 49.52. On the women's side, Emma Marusakova placed 61st after swimming a 58.58.
Regan Geldmacher next represented the women in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming a 1:50.42 to come in 28th. Victoria Schreiber also competed in the event, posting a 1:51.50 to come in 45th place.
Emerson Edwards and Will Bonnett led the way for the Cougars in the 100-yard breaststroke, with each swimmer finishing in the top 10 for the event. Edwards swam a 53.78 to come in seventh place, while Bonnett posted a 54.00 to place ninth. Mackenzie Miller also competed in the event for the women, finishing with the highest ranking among Cougar athletes with a fifth place 1:01.28.
To close out the prelim events, Diego Camacho participated in the 100-yard backstroke. There, he also placed fifth, swimming a 47.96.
The Cougars had numerous athletes qualify for the final events on Friday evening. The finals began with a team of Eliason, Bonnett, Camacho and Ballard competing in the 200-yard medley relay. They went on to finish 12th in the event, posting a 1:28.76. The women also competed in the event, with a team of Marusakova, Miller, Halli Williams and Addie Richards swimming a 1:44.58 to come in 44th.
In the B final of the 400-yard IM, Richards would post a 4:25.75 to come in 6th for the grouping. Bonnet followed Richards later in the evening, competing in the 100-yard breaststroke. Bonnett went on to finish 5th in the A final grouping, swimming a 53.40. Edwards also competed in the A final of the event, swimming a 53.62 to come in 8th place. For the women, Miller competed in the A final of the 100 breast, finishing ninth after posting a 1:01.82.
Next, it was Camacho who went on to compete in the A final of the 100-yard backstroke. He would go on to place seventh, swimming a 47.82.
A team of Williams, Geldmacher, Schreiber and Megan Bergstrom would close out the events for the Cougars, participating in the 800-yard freestyle relay. They went on to swim a 7:29.28 to finish in 19th place among all teams.
The Cougars close out their weekend of events at the CSCAA NICs Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. EST, with the final events beginning in the evening at 6 p.m. EST.
