LAS -- The BYU women’s golf team posted a solid first round at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational, tying for ninth place at +10 overall with a score of 298, just five shots out of fifth place.

“We had a really good first round today,” said BYU head coach Robbie Bosco. “We started off playing really well and made a lot of birdies with very few mistakes. I feel pretty good about the position we’re in right now. It got pretty windy and cold out there towards the end so hopefully tomorrow we can come out, handle the conditions and have a good round.”

Sophomore Maggie Yuan led the way for BYU as she went 1-under-par on the day with four birdies to tie for 10th place overall. Starting on the ninth hole, Yuan went as low as -3 on the scoreboard before finishing the round -2 on the back nine holes and +1 on the front nine.

Junior Jade Bollinger also found herself towards the top of the pack as the tied for 20th place at +1 in the first round. The Cougar leader for most of the day, Bollinger struggled on her final nine holes but finished the round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole to give her momentum heading into Tuesday’s second round.

Cougar freshmen Kelsey Vines and Amanda Keith both went +5 on the day to tie for 54th place. Each golfer also notched three birdies in her respective round and went +3 on the front nine holes and +2 on the back nine. Junior Sara Romero went 10-over-par in the first round.

Second-round action will begin Tuesday with Romero scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. PST.
