Mateo earns third-straight top-6 finish, BYU takes ninth
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Allysha Mae Mateo turned in her third-straight top-6 finish as BYU women’s golf took ninth at the San Diego State Classic on Tuesday.
The Preseason All-WCC honoree braved the difficult conditions to turn in rounds of 76-75-72—223 for a 7-over-par total. Her even-par final round vaulted her nine spots up the leaderboard into solo sixth, her fourth top-6 finish of the season.
No. 30 Iowa State (303-289-305—897) took home the team championship after shooting 33-over as a team to best No. 39 Georgia (304-294-303—901) by four shots. No. 50 Denver took third at 45-over-par, followed by No. 29 Houston (303-300-315—918) at 54-over. UNLV (316-295-308—919) rounded out the top-5 at 55-over-par.
Georgia’s Caterina Don (75-71-70—216) went 3-under over her final 36-holes to earn the individual championship with teammate Jo Hua Hung (71-71-75—217) finishing runner-up. Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn of Iowa State, the 10th-ranked player in the country, took third after shooting 76-70-73—219. Darcy Habgood of Washington State and Anna Zanusso of Denver tied for fourth with Mateo finishing sixth alone.
Alexa Udom finished in a tie for 29th after posting rounds of 79-75-80—234. After only recording one top-30 finish in three events last season, the sophomore has earned top-30 finishes in both events in which she has teed it up this spring.
Kerstin Ngakuru shot 78-80-80—238 to finish tied for 36th while Lila Galeai turned in rounds of 80-78-88—246. Adeline Anderson rounded out the scoring for BYU with rounds of 81-85-81—246.
After a week off, the Cougars will be back in California for the Gunrock Invitational at Del Paso Country Club, Feb. 27-28.
