BYU’s Mateo, Soifua named to all-wcc preseason women’s golf team
SAN MATEO, California – BYU senior Naomi Soifua and junior Allysha Mae Mateo were named to the All-WCC Preseason Women’s Golf Team on Wednesday.
This is the second straight year that both players have been named to the conference preseason team. Nominations were made by each of the WCC’s five women’s golf head coaches, none of which were allowed to vote for their own players.
Soifua, from Provo, Utah, jumpstarted her Cougar career as a sophomore with a fifth place finish at the 2018-19 WCC Championship and a place on the All-WCC First Team. As a junior in the fall of 2019, Soifua shot a career low 8-under-par 64 in the third round of the Washington State Cougar Cup that tied a BYU record for lowest individual 18-hole score.
Mateo, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, recorded four top-five finishes in 2019-20 as a sophomore. Behind a career-low third round score of 3-under-par 68, she won the Coeur d’Alene Collegiate with a final score of 212. Following her sophomore season, Mateo was named to the WCC All-Academic team and WCGA All-American Scholar team. Earlier this week, Mateo finished tied for third among five nationally ranked teams from the Big 12 at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
Soifua, Mateo, and the BYU women's golf team continue the spring season Feb. 15-16 at the Rebel Beach Intercollegiate hosted at the Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas.
