FAIRFAX, Calif. – Lea Garner led BYU women’s golf on day one of the Bay Area Intercollegiate tournament, shooting two over par in round one and on par in round two.

The Cougars faced a competitive field, including No. 11 Washington and Oregon, who sit in first and second place, respectively. On a par-71 course, Washington scored an impressive 555 point low and Oregon is close behind with 566.

“It's a good challenge,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “There are a lot of ranked teams here, a lot of top-30 schools. Obviously, it's great. You want to play the best. We just struggled at first, but had a good comeback in the second round. The goal is to improve again tomorrow. ”

After round two, BYU was in 11th place with 606 points, moving up from 12th place after round one. West Coast Conference rivals Gonzaga and San Francisco finished the day in eighth with 590 and tenth with 599, respectively. Colorado State, UC Riverside and UC Irvine are also among the competition, all schools the Cougars are used to playing and beating.

“It's just like any other sport,” Roberts said. "You struggle some days. Today was one of those days, but we just need to get a little more comfortable, make the adjustment and play better tomorrow."

Round three will begin with a shotgun start Tuesday, March 10, at 8:30 a.m. PDT. Live scoring will be available on the BYU women's golf schedule page.
