Haczkiewicz, Mateo and Galeai named WCC All-Conference

SAN MATEO, Calif. — BYU golfers Annick Haczkiewicz, Allysha Mae Mateo and Lila Galeai were named to the 2021-22 Women’s Golf All-WCC Team on Monday.

“We are ranked 40th in the country and have three team wins, but without these three ladies none of that happens,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “Each one of them have contributed to the success of this team week in and week out. I am proud to be their coach because of how they have represented BYU with passion and heart both on and off the course.”

Haczkiewicz, Mateo and Galeai were named to the All-WCC Team based on votes cast by coaches following the 2022 WCC Championship in which the Cougars finished runner-up.

Haczkiewicz bolstered quite the resume during the 2021-22 campaign. The senior collected the first win of her college career at the Texas State Invitational by shooting rounds of 68-75-68—211, including going 6-under-par in her last 12-holes to win the title.

Until this season, the Las Vegas product had recorded one top-5 finish in 28 events. However, during her senior year she added nine top-25 finishes, six top-15’s and finished in the top-4 four times including the Texas State Invitational victory.

“Annick arguably had a season that could have earned her the conference golfer of the year award,” said Roberts. “She is a fierce competitor and her win at Texas State separated her from her peers. Going 6-under in her last 12 holes to win shows the quality of her overall game and her ability to deliver in big moments. She has been our rock week in and week out.”

Allysha Mae Mateo came into the season as the reigning WCC Golfer of the Year, and during the 2021-22 season she did not disappoint. The senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, recorded seven top-25 finishes, finished in the top-15 five times and grabbed two top-5’s at the Mercedez-Benz Collegiate Championship and Texas State Invitational.

“Allysha Mae is just solid,” said Roberts. “For the last four years she has been our most consistent player. Week in and week out she came through when we need it the most. Her game is full of strengths and she continues to rack up conference awards and impress on and off the course.”

In addition to being named WCC All-Conference twice, Mateo holds a 3.94 GPA in the Marriott School of Business master of accountancy program. The MAcc program at BYU is the fourth ranked program in the country according to the U.S. News & World Report.

Just a sophomore, Lila Galeai, of Orem, Utah, is the youngest of the three Cougars named All-WCC. 

 “Lila set the tone for her sophomore season when she tied for first in the opening tournament of the fall by shooting 10-under-par,” said Roberts. “She had an unbelievable fall and continues to get better every day. As she is only a sophomore, it will be fun to see what she can do throughout the rest of her BYU career.”

Galeai rose to the occasion during her second year in the BYU women’s golf program. The sophomore caught her groove at the end of the 2020-21 campaign with top-20 finishes in her last three events including an 18th place finish at the 2021 WCC Championship.

She carried that momentum in to the 2021-22 season and started it off with a bang, tying for first at the Dick McGuire Invitational in early September. She continued that momentum earning five top-20 finishes and two top-10’s including a third place finish at the Dale McNamara Invitational.

“I am very proud of these girls," said Roberts. "Each day they give it their all. We are excited to continue playing as a team in the post season and see what these three can do.”

After their runner-up finish at the WCC Championship, the Cougars are ranked No. 37 in the country and will find out where they play next on April 27 at 6 p.m. EDT during the 2022 NCAA Women’s Golf Selection Show that will air live on the Golf Channel. If selected, BYU will compete in one of the six NCAA regionals played May 9-11.
