Cougars in 10th after first day in Dick McGuire Invitational
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The BYU women's golf team is in 10th place after the first day of the Dick McGuire Invitational on Monday at the UNM Championship Course.
Due to severe weather on the course, the last two holes of the second round will be finished Tuesday morning before the third round.
"We played well," head coach Carrie Roberts said. "The first round was good, in the second round we were kind of losing some steam but kind of keeping our position. It's a tough field, so if we can finish well tomorrow I will feel good."
After the first day, Northwestern is in first place at five-under-par, followed by UNLV at two-under-par. BYU stuck around the middle of the pack throughout the day and finished in 10th place. The tournament, hosted by the University of New Mexico, has 16 teams in it, including West Coast Conference foes Gonzaga and Pepperdine who ended the day in fifth and seventh respectively.
Junior Lea Garner and freshman Sierra Harr led the effort for the Cougars. They both finished the day tied for 26th, shooting four-over-par. Harr was in the top five individually for part of the day. Kendra Dalton, another freshman, had a good day as well, shooting five-over-par and ending the day tied for 30th.
"Great round for Sierra, considering it was only her second tournament," Roberts said. "I'm very happy with her first round. Lea was playing well in the second round and Kendra played well in the morning."
The rest of the team struggled against tough competition. Maria Yacaman shot 10-over-par, leaving her tied for 64th. Carly Oldroyd and Annie Yang both shot 15-over-par and tied for 80th place for the day.
Pepperdine's Marissa Chow represented the WCC well, shooting two-under-par and ending the day tied for third place.
The Cougars shot birdies well in the first two rounds. They had 13 birdies, which was the third most in the tournament.
BYU will resume competition to finish the rest of the second round on Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. MST. The third round will follow. Live stats for the final round can be found at birdiefire.com.
