Win Closes Out Kajikawa

TEMPE -- Led again by a mix of seniors and freshmen, No. 16 BYU (2-3) finished out the Kajikawa Classic with a 7-2 win against No. 19 Texas A&M (1-2) on Saturday.

Senior pitcher Paige Affleck went the distance, allowing two earned runs and three hits while gathering seven strikeouts. Fellow senior Jessica Fitu closed out a solid weekend, hitting 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. In the Classic's five games, Fitu hit 9-for-18 with two home runs, two doubles and four RBI.

But it was Lacey Millett's base running that changed the momentum of the game and Carly Duckworth's 2-for-4 day, including a solo home run in her first-career start, that broke open a tied game. Duckworth started in right field against the Aggies a day after pitching two shutout innings in the Cougars' previous game.

"I was glad to see our team show up and compete the way we're capable of competing," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "It would've been easy to stay down, but our players played with heart and passion today and played a complete game."

With the game tied at 2-2 entering the sixth, freshman Katie Manuma hit her second single of the game to lead off. With Millett in as a pinch runner for Manuma, senior Caschjen Atagi laid down a sac bunt. Instead of stopping at second, Millett raced all the way to third, sliding in under the tag. Millett reach home a batter later on a ground out by junior Delaney Willard.

"I took a look and no one was at third base so it became a footrace," Millett said, "and I'm going to win that footrace."

The Cougars took their one-run lead and ran away with the game in top of the final inning as Duckworth took the first pitch of the inning and sent it out of the park. BYU quickly loaded the bases, scoring one run off of an error before Willard doubled to right field, bringing in Fitu and junior Jessica Dugas.

BYU travels to Las Vegas Feb. 17-19, facing Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Thursday before taking on Cal Poly and Boise State on Friday and Stanford and Cal State Northridge on Saturday.
