PROVO -- Senior Christie Zinanti went the distance Saturday, giving up one hit as BYU (36-10, 9-2 MWC) recorded a 6-1 victory over New Mexico (11-33, 1-10) on Senior Day at Gail Miller Field.

“I’m really proud of her (Zinanti) for picking it up after the first inning,” said head coach Gordon Eakin. “She came back and pitched six very solid innings.”

Zinanti (9-1) was able to minimize damage in the first inning after yielding one run, recording two consecutive strikeouts with the bases loaded. The shift in momentum carried the Cougars for the rest of the game en route to their ninth conference win of the season.

After New Mexico jumped out to an early first-inning lead, junior Jessica Fitu put the Cougars back on top in the bottom half of the frame with a bases-clearing, three-run triple. The extra-base hit was her second triple of the season and the Cougars’ fourth on the year.

Zinanti went on to record six straight hitless innings while striking out seven and yielding no earned runs in her last home conference start at Miller Field.

Honored along with Zinanti were catcher Amy Holt, first baseman Andrea Ramirez, third baseman Angeline Quiocho, utility player Whitney Thomas and designated player Amanda Kellum.

“They’re tremendous young women,” Eakin said. “In my mind, talent without character is empty, and they have both.”

In her last home conference start as a Cougar, Quiocho blasted her league-leading 20th home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning with two outs. Quiocho was 1-for-3 with two RBI in the victory.

The Cougars return to action Friday (May 7) against Southern Utah in Cedar City.
