Ranked Cougars Welcome Aggies for Home Opener
PROVO -- With 27 games already played on the road, and nationally ranked once again, No. 25 BYU (20-7) plays its home opener Wednesday in a doubleheader against Utah State.
The last time these two teams met was on March 18, 2008 in Provo. BYU won that game 15-4.
The Cougars begin their home season with a myriad of accomplishments under their belts, and with half of the season left to play the team is optimistic of where they will end up.
Senior third baseman Angie Quiocho is currently leading the team offensively with an impressive .463 batting average, 37 hits, 11 doubles and nine homers.
Quiocho, as of this week, has also been named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week twice.
Senior Andrea Ramirez continues to be a force to be reckoned with for opponents both at the plate and on the field.
Ramirez leads the Cougars in RBI with 30 and maintains a .981 fielding percentage.
Right-handed pitcher Paige Affleck continues to lead the Cougars’ defensive efforts from the circle as she is well on her was to yet another 20-win season. Her current record is 14-5.
Affleck also played a crucial role against their recent 4-2 victory over No. 9 Stanford. That win over No. 9 Stanford was the highest and most impressive win of any MWC team against a nationally ranked team to date.
Her performance against Stanford, along with her other two victories from last weekend, earned Affleck Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week.
The games against Utah State will be played at 3 and 5:15 p.m. (MST).
Only the first game of the doubleheader, 3 p.m. (MST) will be broadcast on BYUTV. The Mountain TV Network will air rebroadcasts of that game on Apr. 1 at 9 a.m., Apr. 3 at 6 p.m., Apr. 4 at 6 a.m., and Apr. 8 at 9 a.m.
Live stats will be provided for both games and can be found at www.byucougars.com.
