Cougar Bats Strike Again
ALBUQUERQUE -- Angeline Quiocho fueled a 10-3 BYU softball victory over New Mexico, as she was a double shy of the cycle with five RBI Saturday night.
With the win the Cougars advance to 26-14 on the season, going a perfect 3-0 in conference play. BYU has also scored at least 10 runs in each of its last four games.
The Cougars took an early lead in the first inning. Freshman Kristin Delahoussaye scored on a Quiocho ground-out before junior Jessica Purcell hit an RBI double to centerfield.
BYU righthander Christie Zinanti kept the Lobos scoreless through one inning, but New Mexico nibbled at the BYU lead and tied the score at 2-2 after three complete innings. A pair of RBI singles gave the Lobos two runs.
The score remained deadlock, as both teams managed to put runners in scoring position but were unable to push runners home.
In the sixth inning Delahoussaye singled to left field to bring in a run, before Quiocho launched her seventh homer of the season. The slugger has now homered in four of her last five games.
Purcell followed with a double down the left field line and scored on freshman Coreen Lopez’ double to left field.
With a 6-2 lead the Cougars fought to maintain a safe distance over New Mexico. Sophomore pitcher Paige Affleck came in to relieve Zinanti after she walked back-to-back batters. Another walk loaded the bases with only one out.
A ground ball back up to the pitcher kept the runner from scoring on the force out. The Lobos recorded a run as their Affleck walked in a run, before a ground out ended the inning.
BYU grabbed four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Caschjen Davis hit a leadoff homer to spark the scoring rally. Quiocho hit her fourth triple of the season to bring in two runs, and she scored on an error during the following at bat, giving BYU a 10-4 lead.
The Cougars are slated for a set of in-state games beginning on Tuesday against cross-town foe Utah Valley in Orem. Then BYU will play the first two of a three-game Deseret First Duel matchup against Utah in Salt Lake City Friday and Saturday.
