Cougars Upset No. 7 Cal
SACRAMENTO -- Jessica Purcell’s RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth inning broke a scoreless game against No. 7 Cal, and led to a 4-0 shutout win by the BYU softball team (18-13).
Sophomore Pitcher Paige Affleck (9-7, 1.65) limited the Golden Bears to five hits, while striking out seven batters. The game marks Affleck’s second complete-game shutout, and her second win against a top-25 opponent.
Following a bunt single from the speedy junior Angeline Quiocho in the top of the fourth, Purcell’s triple to right field brought in the first run of the game. Senior Stephanie Hopkins followed with a single to centerfield to bring in Purcell.
In the fifth BYU furthered its lead after two Cal errors extended the inning. Senior Monica Gonzales led off with a single, and was brought in on a double from Quiocho. Quiocho scored on a single from junior Andrea Ramirez.
Cal mounted its greatest threat at a comeback attempt in the sixth inning when a walk and a single put two runners on. The lead runner was tagged out on a scoring attempt, and Affleck ended the inning with a strikeout with two runners on.
Again in the seventh inning the Golden Bears put two runners on, but Affleck took care of business and quickly worked out of a jam.
Both Purcell and Quiocho finished the day 2-for-4 with an RBI apiece. Gonzales also grabbed two hits as BYU won its second game against a top-25 opponent this season.
The Cougars also exacted revenge on the Golden Bears, who defeated the Cougars 4-2 at the Bayer Cropscience Classic. BYU is now 2-7 against ranked opponents.
The Cougars continue play at the Capitol Classic on Saturday when they face Dartmouth at 9 a.m. (PT) and Cal Poly at 3 p.m. Livestats for both games are available at www.byucougars.com.
