PROVO -- With four games slated at the Mayfair Invitational, the BYU softball team looks to improve its talented young team in Long Beach, Calif. beginning Friday.

Holding a 7-9 record on the season, BYU head coach Gordon Eakin is optimistic when looking toward the Invitational.

“We’ve worked out a lot of early kinks for our young team with our competitive schedule,” Eakin said. “We are working on improving and taking the games inning-by-inning.”

The Cougars will take on Iowa State at 11:15 a.m. (PST) in the day’s first game. Iowa State will prove to be a difficult opponent as the team heads to the Invitational with a 13-2 record. The meeting will be the first since BYU defeated Iowa State 4-1 in 2006.

The Friday nightcap finds the Cougars taking on Wisconsin at 3:45 p.m. (PST). The Cougars beat Wisconsin both times the two met. Wisconsin is 5-8 on the season.

The Invitational concludes with an early morning game against Cal State Northridge at 8:45 a.m. (PST) and finishes with a 1:15 (PST) match up against the hosting Long Beach State 49s.

The all-time series between BYU and Cal State Northridge is split at 1-1, while the meeting between the Cougars and the 49s will be the first.
