BYU Plays No. 13 North Carolina in Regional

PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team (42-18) is scheduled to face No. 13 North Carolina (50-10-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, in the first game of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional Tournament.

The double-elimination Tournament will continue through Saturday. The Chapel Hill Region is one of two regions that play a Thursday to Saturday format.

No. 23 Georgia (43-22) is the top seed in the Chapel Hill Region. Georgia will play Campbell (41-23) in the first round of the Regional.

BYU is 4-7 against top-25 opponents this season. The Cougars four wins against ranked opponents came against teams outside of the top-10, where they are 4-2. Against top-10 teams BYU is 0-5 this season. BYU has not broken into the top-25 polls this season, but has received votes all season.

North Carolina, the Regional host school and is the Regional's second seed, recorded its first 50-win season and is making its sixth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Tar Heels hold a 6-12 mark in the post season.

BYU is 4-8 in its four years of NCAA competition. After recording defeating Cal Poly 9-0 in the first round of the Regional BYU lost to Arizona State 1-7. The Cougars rallied after the loss and defeated Southern Utah 10-5 to propel BYU to its furthest post-season appearance. In the Regional Championship game The Cougars matched Arizona State with a 3-3 tie after three innings, but gave the Sun Devils the lead with back-to-back homers in the fourth. BYU was unable to overcome the deficit and lost 3-6.

Following their first Regional game, BYU will play again on Saturday with the opponent and time depending upon the first round results.
