Head Home With Two Losses

LAS -- The BYU women's softball team suffered two disappointing losses to both Kansas, 5-3, and San Jose State, 3-2, during its final day of the Louisville Slugger Red Desert Classic in Las Vegas. The Cougars are now 7-3 on the season.

"It was very disappointing for us today," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We didn't show up to play in either of our games."

During the first game, freshman pitcher Paige Affleck recorded her first loss of the season and is now 3-1 on the year.

The Cougars were able to put up seven hits against the Jayhawks, but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, and two errors proved to be costly by allowing three unearned runs in the second inning.

BYU jumped ahead of Kansas when lead-off batter Monica Gonzales reached first on a error from the Kansas first baseman, and then scored off of a double up the middle from Emi Snow Willing.

Kansas tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning with a single to right field that brought in a Kansas base runner from second.

The Cougars regained their lead in the second inning with a two-run home run from sophomore Amanda Vance, her second on the season.

The Jayhawks came up to bat with a 3-1 score deficit in the bottom of the third inning. Two walk, a wild pitch and a passed ball advanced Kansas base runners, and game them a 4-3 lead at the end of the inning.

A solo shot by the Kansas lead-off batter in the fifth inning extended the Jayhawk lead to 5-3. The Cougars were unable to come back despite putting on six base runners in the remaining innings.

Against San Jose State, BYU allowed the Spartans to take the lead in the third inning when a fielder's choice permitted the first run. A two-run homer gave San Jose State a 3-0 lead at the close of the third.

BYU senior Dani Snow put the Cougars on the board with a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning. Caschjen Davis knocked in pinch runner Stephanie Platt Hopkins in the top of the sixth inning and BYU was unable to score any runs in the seventh inning, leaving the score at 3-2.

The Cougars next travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for five games against Tennessee, Louisiana Monroe and Virginia in the Tennessee Classic Feb. 21-23. Live stats for the games are available at www.byucougars.com.
