SANTA BARBARA -- The BYU softball team picked up its third consecutive win of the season with a 6-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara. The Cougars improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Gauchos fall to 10-7.

"I was pleased with the total team effort," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We came out and competed very well and had a solid defensive performance."

BYU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, marking the first time this season the Cougars have scored a run in the first inning and held a lead early in a game.

Cougar sophomore Paige Paramore, a University of Texas at San Antonio transfer, recorded the first home run of her BYU career with a solo left field shot in the top of the second inning to put BYU up by 2 runs (2-0).

UCSB answered back with a run in the bottom of the second inning, but the Cougars put two more runs on the board in the top of the third to give them a three-run cushion.

The score remained 4-1 until the top of the sixth inning when with two runners on base BYU freshman Jennifer Whiteley hit her first career double to score two runs. Whiteley went 2-for-3 from the plate for the Cougars.

Freshman Krystle Chamberlain also had a great offensive performance for BYU, hitting 2-for-3 in the game and scoring two of the six Cougar runs.

The Gauchos were only able to score one more run in the bottom of the seventh to end the game with a 6-2 Cougar victory.

Brooke Boyce (1-1) pitched a complete game for BYU to capture her first win of the season on the mound.

On deck for the Cougars is UC Riverside on Friday at 12:30 p.m. MT followed by Loyola Marymount at 3 p.m. MT.
