BYU Loses Close Game to Cal-Poly, Shuts Out St. Mary's
ST. GEORGE -- The BYU women's softball team lost a close one to Cal-Polu 7-6, and rebounded to win against St. Mary's 9-0, in five innings to finish the opening weekend of the season at 2-2.
In the first game against the Gaels, BYU led 6-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning but failed to close out the game. After hitting two singles, the Gaels loaded the bases with a walk. Cal-Poly tied the game with a hit-by-pitch and then Natalie Carrillo singled to bring in the winning run.
All-American Oli Keohohou went 2-3 with a home run, her second of the season, and two runs scored. Freshman Ashlyn Russell went 3-3 and hit two home runs, the first two of her career, and scored two runs.
Freshman Brooke Boyce got the nod on the mound with her first career start. She allowed four hits and three runs in five innings on the mound.
In game two against St. Mary's, the Cougars overcame the letdown of the Cal-Poly game and won 9-0 in only five innings led by sophomore Debbie Dodds' 2-3 performance with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore Niki Andersen picked up the shut out allowing only three hits in five innings.
Offense was the key for the 2-2 start on the season, BYU produced 30 runs in four games.
"Right now our hitting is much better than we expected so early in the season," head coach Gordon Eakin said. "There is still plenty of softball to play and we hope to improve on all aspects of the game."
The Cougars will not play next weekend and will resume their season at the Texas A&M Tournament in College Station Texas on Feb. 14. The Cougars will play the Aggies and McNeese St. twice in two days at the tournament.
